Sale Sharks in talks to sign World Cup winner Vincent Koch
Exclusive: Former Wasps prop visited Sale’s training facility at Carrington on Tuesday By Charlie Morgan, Senior Rugby Writer 25 October 2022 • 7:04pm
Sale Sharks has emerged as a possible destination for World Cup-winning tighthead prop Vincent Koch in a development that could have major ramifications for the Premiership title race.
It is understood that Koch, one of the prize assets to have left Wasps, visited Sale’s training facility at Carrington on Tuesday as Alex Sanderson’s side welcomed the Argentina squad to aid with their preparations for a top-of-the-table clash with Saracens this weekend.
The Springbok is a man in demand, having been linked strongly to Stade Français in the Top 14 as well as with a move back to his native South Africa with the Sharks franchise. Reports in South Africa indicated that Koch could join the Durban-based Sharks via a short-term deal at Saracens.
A source close to the Springbok suggested that Koch, who was also spotted at the Stade Jean-Bouin on Saturday as Stade Français beat Brive 22-0, according to French publication RMC Sport, is currently weighing up a number of options as his representatives open negotiations with Sale.
If Koch were to stay in England, it would be a boon for the Premiership that would add a fascinating dynamic to the title race over the coming months. Saracens and Sale currently occupy the top two spots in the league and are due to meet at StoneX Stadium on Sunday. Koch never made an appearance for Wasps
Koch spent five seasons with Saracens, where he worked closely with Sanderson, before joining Wasps over the summer in what was set to be a lucrative move that demonstrated how a lower salary cap could redistribute talent around the competition.
Saracens subsequently bolstered their tighthead stable, which already included Italy international Marco Riccioni and Alec Clarey, with Christian Judge and Edoardo Bello.
In the end, Koch never represented Wasps. Following his involvement with South Africa in this year’s Rugby Championship, he had been named in the side to face Northampton Saints at the Coventry Building Society Arena before withdrawing due to a bout of the flu. Wasps would go into administration just over a week later, with Koch one of 167 employees to be made redundant immediately.
Despite recruiting strongly over the past year or so, adding George Ford, Jonny Hill and Tom O’Flaherty ahead of this season, Sanderson has consistently insisted that he still has some room in the salary cap for new additions. The respective predicaments of Worcester Warriors and Wasps have yielded unexpected opportunities in the market.
“It’s an ever-shifting environment, the climate right now ,” Sanderson said last week. “It’s a bit of a buyers’ market. That is a horrendous expression, but it is because there are a lot of players on the market. You’ve just got to keep having constant conversations. It’s a never-ending task, recruitment and retention. Those things go side-by-side because all the jigsaw pieces have to fit within the salary cap.”
Sanderson revealed last week that he would be holding Zoom interviews with an undisclosed number of players from Wasps. It is thought that centre Burger Odendaal was one of these targets, with Sale entitled to injury credits to cover the absences of Connor Doherty and Luke James. That coup now looks less likely, though.
Even so, Koch would swell a South African contingent at Sale that remains significant even after the departures of Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Faf de Klerk and Lood de Jager. Dan and Jean-Luc du Preez recently re-signed with the club, with their brother Rob in exceptional form at fly-half. Jono Ross, Akker van der Merwe, Cobus Wiese, Nic Schonert and Coenie Oosthuizen are also part of the first-team squad. Indeed, Oosthuizen and Schonert are two of Sanderson’s front-line tightheads along with James Harper, the promising youngster.
Koch, one of the most dangerous front-row carriers in the sport, is sure to be in South Africa’s plans for their November fixtures against Ireland, France, Italy and England. His availability during the Six Nations and through to the end of the Premiership campaign would be a huge boost to Sale were they to secure his services.
